System builders have strived to create transportable high-powered gaming boxes, to varying degrees of success. The PC Club Enpower Silencer ($2,899 as tested)—a quiet system that packs a performance wallop—has gotten closer than most. At roughly 23 pounds, it's not exactly as portable as a notebook, but you won't get this level of performance from a desktop replacement notebook at this point, even one with a desktop processor.

Bottom Line

Truly earning the title silent but deadly, the Enpower Silencer is perfect for the gamer in a quiet room, or anyone sick of the whine from the multiple case fans found in a tower PC. If you want 3D performance far above that of a desktop replacement notebook, the Enpower Silencer makes a great addition to the collection.

Pros

Quiet fans, with stellar performance. Beats recently tested 3.8-GHz P4 systems on gaming tests. Compact case is LAN party friendly. Fast 12-ms LCD monitor.

Cons

No Media card slots. AGP is only 4X. Case door a little flimsy. Limited internal expansion.
