Velocity Micro Gamer's Edge PCX

Velocity Micro Gamers' Edge PCX

REVIEW

The latest Velocity Micro Gamer's Edge PCX desktop, featuring the new Pentium 4 660 processor (3.74 GHz), doesn't blow away the gaming competition in terms of performance. But the CPU improves on older P4 offerings, with the addition of XD bit capability, EM64T support, and SpeedStep technology. These, together with the speed, make the CPU (and this system) a good choice for forward-looking buyers who will hold onto the system for a few years.

Bottom Line

The Velocity Micro Gamer's Edge PCX is cheaper than a fully tricked-out SLI-powered system, and it's a decent performer. The system gives you most of the 3D performance of a dual graphics card system in a single-card solution. The Gamer's Edge PCX will satisfy all but the most demanding drag racers.

Pros

Performance from a work-a-day P4 that rivals that of a P4 EE?powered system. SpeedStep helps power consumption and cooling needs. Plenty of expansion space. Fast LCD display good for gaming.

Cons

To take advantage of the chip's EM64T technology, you'll need to use Linux-64 OS (or wait for the upcoming Windows XP Professional x64 Edition).
