Virgin Electronics Boomtube, Boomtube EX

Virgin Electronics Boomtube, Boomtube EX

REVIEW

Back to Pump Up Your Portable PlayerThe names may sound like something from a Marvel comic, and they may look more like telescopes than speakers, but you'd be making a mistake if you didn't take the Virgin Electronics Boomtube and Boomtube EX seriously. These ruggedly roadworthy, anodized-aluminum cylinders aren't the smallest or lightest speakers on the market, but they can pump out sound that's brawny enough to power a LAN party.

Bottom Line

At two pounds, the Boomtube is more of a luggable than a portable, but that becomes less important when you hear this twist-apart cylindrical speaker system pump out good-quality sound at high volume levels. It doesn't have a room-shaking low-end, but it's still a great choice for LAN parties, notebook gaming, or lawn events.

The Boomtube EX is a juiced-up version of the original Boomtube that adds a bass unit, rechargeable lithium ion batteries, and two 24-watt digital ampli-fiers. It's also heavier and costs twice as much, but it's just as easy to toss in a backpack, boasts flatter frequency response, and generates even more outrageous volume levels.

Pros

Boomtube - Rugged construction; high volume levels; choice of battery or AC power.

Boomtube EX - Rugged construction; very loud; choice of AC power or rechargeable Li-Ion battery; includes both battery and AC adaptor; good sound.

Cons

Boomtube - AC adaptor not included; no deep bass; minor mid-range colorations.

Boomtube EX - pricey; 3.5 pound carrying weight.
