Sony VPL-CS7

Sony VPL-CS7

REVIEW

When you first turn on the Sony VPL-CS7 ($1,250 street), you'll notice that something is different. In addition to the whirling motor noises that are a familiar part of any projector's light engine, you'll hear some additional motors at work as the projector automatically swings the built-in lens cover out of the way, and raises itself up to the position it was last used in. This sort of automation is an unusual but welcome feature in portable projectors.

Bottom Line

The Sony VPL-CS7 projector has a few more features than some competing SVGA projectors in the 6-pound range, though it is missing a few as well. And its price is well above the $1,000 that is more common for this class of projector. It performs well but does not have enough to stand out.

Pros

Attractive case with motorized lens cover and tilt. Good image quality. Nice on-screen menu system.

Cons

Limited connectivity. No mouse functions on remote.
