REVIEW

When we first tested the Roku PhotoBridge HD1000 nearly a year ago, we were only moderately impressed. The HD1000 didn't do much more than you'd expect from any reasonable digital media hub, except that it added support for high-definition video. As we've seen more media hubs fall short, as Roku fixed some early glitches, and as the price has come down from the stratosphere (from around $500 to $299.99 direct), the HD1000 now stands out from the crowd. In fact, it's the best digital media hub you can buy, regardless of whether or not you have HDTV.

Bottom Line

The Roku HD1000 is the most elegant and advanced digital media hub we've tested yet. It features HDTV support and front-panel slots for direct photo playback—and a new, lower price.

Pros

Can pull files directly from network hard drive. HD (or standard) TV output. Front flash-memory slots for photos. Attractive design, simple remote.

Cons

Few buttons on remote. No integrated wireless (works with external USB Wi-Fi adapter). WMA music support is promised soon, but is not quite ready as of this writing.
