REVIEW

The Aberdeen Stonehaven A261S ($6,575 direct, plus $755 for Windows Server 2003 OS with five CALs) looks like most 2U rackmount servers, with its six drive bays, indicator LEDs, a floppy disk drive and a CD-ROM. Inside, however, you'll find the reason behind its powerhouse performance: dual AMD Opteron 250 processors running at 2.4 GHz. While the Opteron 250 has a slower clock speed than the Xeon 3.6-GHz processors in the servers we reviewed in our latest 2U server roundup, the Opteron 250 gives the Aberdeen Stonehaven A261S a punch not to be taken lightly.

A Web server workhorse, the Aberdeen Stonehaven A261S uses the power of two AMD Opteron 250 processors to reach the height of performance. The Stonehaven A261S proves to be a very good choice for the Web-based business that wants power and storage space behind its development or main line applications.

Pros

Dual Opteron 250 equals Web serving power. Can interface with up to 4.8TB in XDAS external storage. Eight DIMM slots for memory expansion.

Cons

Loud cooling fans. Management tools aren't as compelling as those of other servers.
