Maxx Home MiniWoofer

Maxx Home MiniWoofer

REVIEW

Waves Audio's Maxx Home MiniWoofer is an innovative add-on bass speaker designed to augment a two-piece speaker system, TV, tabletop radio, or any other device that could use a little extra low end. What differentiates it from other external woofers is Waves' patented MaxxBass signal-processing technology, which exploits the laws of psychoacoustics to make the MiniWoofer sound like it's producing deeper bass than should be possible from a six-pound, seven-inch cube.

Bottom Line

The Maxx Home MiniWoofer uses patented psychoacoustic technology to produce much deeper bass than should be possible from a seven-inch cube and 30-watt amp. The results don't sound half-bad, but it's better suited for consumer-electronics devices like television sets than it is for computer systems.

Pros

Relatively small and light external bass unit. Very smooth response. Auxiliary LFE (5.1 subwoofer) input bypasses internal crossover.

Cons

Not a floor-shaker. Fixed crossover frequency. No 1/8th-inch input jacks or output jacks for external satellites.
