The HP Deskjet 6540 Color Inkjet Printer ($149.99 direct) delivers what every ink jet ideally should, but few do. On the one hand, it's a speed demon. On the other, its output quality ranges from just short of very good to just short of excellent. Starting from a foundation like that, any other features—such as the ability to switch the black cartridge with either a color photo cartridge or a photo-gray cartridge for monochrome photos—are icing on the cake.

Pros

Exceptional speed for an ink jet. Overall output quality is better than for most ink jets.

Cons

For best results on different kinds of output, you need to change cartridges continually, choosing black, photo color, or photo gray as appropriate.
