Among personal all-in-ones (which we define as any inexpensive AIO that lacks a network port), the Canon imageClass MF5550 ($500 street) is unusual in that it provides a built-in fax modem, a 50-sheet ADF, and even a network option. And it's one of the few in its class that offers good to excellent output quality across the board. This combination makes the MF5550 one of the better choices in personal monochrome laser AIOs.

Bottom Line

The Canon imageClass MF5550 is a personal all-in-one with a built-in fax modem and 50-sheet automatic document feeder. It lacks some conveniences—notably a driver to fax from any program—but it will serve as a copier, fax machine, scanner, and monochrome laser printer with good to excellent output quality.

Pros

Excellent text quality. Good graphics and photo quality. Built-in fax mode and 50-sheet automatic document feeder. Good performance.

Cons

Copies only from front panel. No fax printer driver. The only way to fax from a PC is via the drag-and-drop feature in Presto! PageManager.
