REVIEW

If you need a laser-based AIO with a wealth of features, the Brother MFC-8840DN is a good candidate. The 8840DN lacks a few extras, such as duplex scanning, but offers other functions you may find useful. You can use it as a standalone copier or fax machine, scan to any system on your network, fax from your computer, run multipage documents through the 50-page ADF, and print on both sides of a page. Most important, the 21-page-per-minute (ppm) engine offers both reasonably fast performance and output that ranges from a little better than fair for graphics to just short of excellent for text.

Bottom Line

The Brother MFC-8840DN four-function AIO offers lots of features, including a built-in fax modem, 50-page automatic document feeder, and a duplexer for printing. Graphics output is a bit below par, but output quality is better overall than for most monochrome printers.

Pros

Good performance; high-quality text; better-quality photos than most monochrome lasers or all-in-ones (AIOs); 50-sheet automatic document feeder; built-in fax modem; duplex printing.

Cons

Graphics and photos show subtle dithering patterns.
