REVIEW

Microsoft won't let you add the Windows Media Center Edition OS to existing Windows XP PCs, but for about $50 you can come tantalizingly close with a PC-based remote control and companion big-font on-screen interface. The best and most polished of these products we've yet seen is the SnapStream Firefly. It's a class act all the way, from its idiot-proof setup to the reasonable emulation of the interface used by Media Center PCs (often called a "10-foot interface," as that's the distance you're meant to view it from, sitting on your a couch or easy chair). There are half a dozen minor quirks, but none are showstoppers.

Bottom Line

SnapStream Firefly is an affordable radio frequency (not infrared) remote control that turns any PC into something close to a Media Center Edition PC. If you want all the software pieces, consider a bundle with a TV tuner card.

Pros

Gives any PC (or a TV connected thereto) a 10-foot interface; large fonts, easy control of multimedia apps via remote control. RF remote doesn't require perfect line of sight with receiver. Clear, idiot-proof setup. Excellent companion PVR/channel guide software.

Cons

Controls many apps but enlarges fonts on just a handful. Included music player won't show album art or song information. Clumsy on multimedia apps needing text input. Costs mount if you add TV tuner/PVR software and upgraded media player software. Can't control a connected TV or stereo receiver.
