    D-Link SecuriCam DCS-5300W Internet Camera

The D-Link SecuriCam DCS-5300W Internet Camera ($380 street) functions with any 802.11b-compliant network. The one-quarter-inch CCD sensor delivers good low-light performance, and the glass lens ensures a relatively sharp image. It also has a built-in microphone.

Initial configuration is easily accomplished via the wired Ethernet connection using the camera's built-in Web server. When you first connect to the camera, you are prompted to download the ActiveX control that lets you view the camera image. Wireless settings include SSID and WEP; WPA is not supported.

The camera pans 270 degrees and tilts 90 degrees. Video resolution can be set to either 320-by-240 or 160-by-120. You can program up to 24 preset positions and include any or all of them in the Auto Patrol feature (where the camera cycles through a set routine to give you a sweeping view of an area). The included software lets you view up to 16 cameras and record images to your hard drive.

Additionally, you can configure up to three windows within the video frame to detect motion. If motion is detected, the camera can be set to send images via FTP or e-mail—in theory, at least. On our tests, FTP worked properly, but we were unable to e-mail snapshots automatically from the camera.

Still, the SecuriCam is worth a look. It offers a solid set of features at a good price.

Camera runs fine within network. On the internet, it simply does not work with of my 8 computers on 3 different internet connections. The audio driver download caused the dreaded blue screen on every machine (running Win 2000). If I released tech products like this I would be out of business.

Since November of 2003 I have gone through 4 yes FOUR DCS-1000W 3 from Comp USA which did not function in the wireless state ( COMP USA was fantastic about exchanging the cams ). The fourth was a cross shipment that I paid for 2 day UPS that was to arive on a Friday and did not arive until the following Monday. This arrangment was through D-Link after many days on the phone with tech Support levels 1,2,3 They tested the cam before they shiped at my request. Alas it worked as a wireless cam but the motion detection does not work and saving video clips to the hard drive does not function correctly. Sales then informed me of the DCS-5300W and stated all the functins ( motion detection and Email notification ) worked. Well guys guess what another product from D-link that does not work as advertised. At this point I give up on D-Link wireless cams and I have demanded my money back from D-Link as they took me out of the loop with Comp USA. I got a lot of crap from the sales manager's boss indicating they do not refund money just exchange it for other D-Link products. I then instructed the Sames Manager to inform his boss that if after all the efforts I had made to make their product work and I dont get my MONEY back I would start making phone calls creating far more of a irritating situation then they would ever imagine. Guess what they agreed to get me a cash refund. I will now get the Toshiba web cam that I know does work as advertised. One other note the D-link add on security monitoring software does not work and it has thrown my XP monitor setting off to get this 1280 x 720 resolution and all the Icons get trashed on my desktop. Stay clear of D-link wireless Web Cams they DO NOT work as ADVERTISED. One last note D-Link has admitted from 3 seperate individuals that the E-Mail notification does not work with some IPS services and I have Comcast, figure that one out.
