    U.S. Robotics USR8054

The U.S. Robotics USR8054 boasts solid wireless performance and offers a lot of traffic-filtering choices—not to mention a configurable NAT firewall. Unfortunately, the USR8054's setup tools are a little confusing, and security options don't include WPA.

    Initial Configuration and Documentation

We are puzzled by the installation CD's title, "Ready Set Connect," since it contains nary a wizard or assistance besides a simple help file. Only after you're connected to the router's main interface do you find a setup wizard that helps you with the basics of your broadband connection, including security. The PC Card utility, however, strongly resembles D-Link's tool and is equally easy to use.

    Management and Features

This product does have a clean, easy-to-navigate management interface, though the integrated system help file seemed to be missing some of the menu items. One glitch we noticed: The interface failed to return to the appropriate menu upon reboot. This occurred after changing the device's configuration. Still, the router has plenty of features, including a DHCP server, DMZ support, and UPnP.

    Security

Filtering is one of the biggest strengths of the USR8054. You can filter traffic by IP, MAC, or protocol. The integrated firewall is also very configurable. But because the router lacks WPA support, we cannot recommend it for business use.

Here's what PC Mag's reviewer doesn't know. TURNS OUT that every problem I ever had with this product was due to a Microsoft product BUT is easily avoided. FURTHER, this DOES offer WPA security when using the USR 5410 PC card or other USR receivers -- the only reason PC Mag didn't get that is because Microsoft Windows wireless network configuration does not support WPA security, nor even 256K WEP security, BOTH of which ARE supported by USR out of the box. Having tried 4 major manufacturers including DLink and LinkSys and found them unworkable, I stuck with this USR product even though at first it didn't deliver the promised 108 mbs (it gave a consistent 54mbs) and was unstable in that it frequently rendered my always-on cable connection "off-and-on" but that was only after I download MS Win XP Pro Service Pack 2. Then I found that by re-installing the USR software things worked just fine (it just needs to be loaded or re-loaded after SP2). FURTHER, USR has a new software release that consistently delivers 125 mbs AND is completely stable so long as I use FireFox which is free from Mozilla.org (you can still use iExplorer, just don't leave it running when you are away from your computer for an hour or more because it interrupts your connection and you must reboot. Bottom line: USR keeps me connected for weeks at a time when I don't leave MS products like iExplorer or Messenger running -- there are much better products available free, like the FireFox web browser and Yahoo Messenger, AIM (aol instant messenger) and more. Windows XP service pack 2 causes major problems, but just RELOAD the USR software and everything's great. Using the latest USR software release available online free at usr.com you get 125 mbs speed. Turn off the selection "use microsoft to configure wireless network" and use USR's system and get state-of-the-art, corporate grade security right out of the box.

Just dosen't work. Always resets so you are online 20% and offline 80% of the time. Haven't been able to access configuration for months. US Robotics Help Online was useless. They have not responded to e-mail. Went ahead and purchased another router (NOT US Robotics) to work while I sort out this 90 day old problem.

When I set the 8054 in a residential setting it works fairly well. I have set it up on one side of the house, but to get a connection which is higher then low, I have to point the router towards the living room which is on the other side. It was very easy to set up, but distance is a concern. When I set the router up at my workplace, I needed to get to the floor below and the signal did not make it through the concrete floor. I'm hopeing the linksys wrt54gs will...I get back on that one.

I discovered, and USR confirmed, that this router will not bridge Appletalk between the wired and the wireless side. I have a multiprotocol network printer on the wired side and a mixture of Macintosh (OS 9.2) and PC devices on the wireless side. Macs cannot print via Appletalk to the printer. On another note, I found the user setup to be counter-intuitive. There are too many "enable/disable" choices that are not clearly grouped and explained, and I found myself guessing at the proper settings. While the interface is visually attractive, it's not that easy to sort out, and the online help is abysmal.
