    Netgear WGR624

Though it has plenty of features and impressive performance in its proprietary turbo mode, the Netgear WGR624 has a setup that's less intuitive than that of other routers in its class, such as those from D-Link and Linksys.

    Initial Configuration and Documentation

Because this product lacks a wizard-driven installation utility, you must feel comfortable manually changing your PC's network configuration. The printed documentation is limited and lacks detail. Once the WGR624 is installed and accessible, a helpful integrated wizard assists with the remainder of the configuration, including setting up your broadband connection.

    Management and Features

We like the router's three-pane management interface. Clean and easy to maneuver, it constantly displays help and explanations in the right-hand pane. This router does provide all the basic functions you'd need, such as a DHCP server, NAT, and an SPI firewall.

    Security

In addition to WPA, the product includes the ability to schedule the browsing times of client PCs on your network by filtering on MAC addresses. The router also includes NAT support and an SPI firewall. Unfortunately, the parental-control functions on the WGR624 are limited. You must manually enter keyword and URL entries to create a blacklist. But the unit can be set up to send alerts via e-mail if suspicious browsing activities should occur.

This netgear router has a lot of great features, but as far as ease of use it has some issues. As far as reliability and speed its a great router. The only problem i see is with the initial setup. It can seem slightly tricky to a standard user who has never setup a wireless network (or network in general). It takes a little looking around to find where to start as its not always straight through. The lack of a wizard can be a big turn off to a lot of users. For users who have a general idea of how to setup a wireless network or wired network, I would definately recommend this router. Mine has been running for at least 7 months without needing to be reset had no security problems and been able to get a wireless signal from anywhere in my house.

I am by no means an expert but I trusted my gut instinct, and a full hour of reading the boxes. I found that the set up was easy and I havent had any problems with it. I bought it at best buy and it was under $50.00 with mail in rebate. I would easily recommend it to anyone from first time buyers to upgraders. If now I could only find a way to fully use the 801.mbps I'd be happier..anyone that can help...ngine51@earthlink.net

just bought this along with their matching pcmcia card. after rebates, the router is $50, the pcmcia card $40, at compusa. the router is on 'v2' now, is called the WGT624, and you'll want to upgrade the firmware (which is extremely easy via the web based administration). the pcmcia card software also should be updated. i get a very solid connection 50 feet from the router, through two floors of the house. i updated my laptop to XP service pack two over the connection - no trouble at all. i've read various complaints about netgear wireless gear in general, so knew i was taking a chance in getting this, but so far it has proven to be very easy, very fast, and very cheap.

Frys had these puppies down to $35 with Rebate - so I had to pull the trigger and upgrade the SMC 802.11.b unit I had. Plugged it up to my laptop, and changed the default settings to match the SMC settings then dropped it in place of the SMC. Could not have been simplier. Running now for several weeks with no issues. Highly recomend.
