On our tests, the Katun Komatsu AirProjector Wireless Presentation System ($999 list) worked flawlessly from the start. The unit starts up in ad hoc mode, which means that it connects directly to a computer using a Wi-Fi connection. Once you establish this connection, however, you can access a Web page stored in the device's controller and reconfigure it for infrastructure mode. This lets it connect to a network through a Wi-Fi access point (AP), providing any computer on a network with access to the display. Run a simple client program (which you can run from the CD without installing it on your hard drive) and anything on the connected computer appears on the display attached to the AirProjector.

Your choices, however, are limited largely to choosing between continuous screen updates or a static screen shot. Since the AirProjector has no remote control, you have to drive your presentation from your computer's keyboard and mouse. Access to the device is more or less first-come, first-served. One computer has to relinquish control before another can take over.

Such limitations are not significant, because the device works well at its fundamental purpose: sending images to a projector (or other display) using a wireless connection. Still, the biggest drawback is the price. At about half the price of a new projector, it is expensive, especially when compared with the Linksys product.
