Like breaking the 4-minute mile and the sound barrier, the $1,000 projector has been a distant goal. Now that the InFocus X1 has reached that goal, expect others to follow suit. But at 6.8 pounds, the X1 is the heaviest projector reviewed here, and at 823 lumens, its measured brightness is near the bottom of the pack. The X1's DLP engine, however, produced the second-highest contrast ratio in our roundup.

The X1's image quality was generally good to excellent, except for the muddy yellows and dark reds that are common among DLP projectors. The X1 has some nice extras, such as a laser pointer on the remote control, but InFocus does not bundle the USB cable that the remote control's mouse functions require.

If you want an inexpensive projector to project small images, as well as one that is well suited to both video and data, the X1 is a good choice.
