One Year Later, Nearly 50 Percent of Instagram Users on Android

As the tech community celebrates the 40th anniversary of the first cell phone call today, Instagram also has something to cheer about — the photo-filtering service launched on Android one year ago.

On April 3, 2012, more than a million people downloaded the Android app. A year later, Android users make up almost half of all Instagrammers.

The application debuted on the iPhone in Oct. 2010, so when the Android app was released, an immediate, albeit small, rivalry began between long-time iPhone Instagrammers, and newbie Android users. Some iPhone owners took to Twitter last April to express annoyance, mostly in jest, that the app was on Android.

“Don’t follow me on Instagram if you got an Android,” user @iFollowBlindPpl wrote. “Only iPhone users following this way. Im blocking Android users. This is war.”
