Upgraded 500GB Tivo Premiere Released Today
Tivo’s adjusted its service prices and upgraded the storage on its entry-level Premiere set-top box.
Thwarting commercials ain’t cheap, but Tivo’s trying to make it easier for customers to skip around to their favorite portions of recorded TV shows by lowering the price of its monthly service plan. That, and the company has gone ahead and boosted the storage space on its entry-level Tivo Premiere set-top box. In other words: More shows for less money. Sort of.
Tivo announced Friday that its reducing its monthly service cost to $15 with a one-year service agreement. Tivo’s multi-service discount will cost users only $13 monthly for those with more than one Tivo device.
However, Tivo upped the price of its entry-level set-top box, the Tivo Premiere, from $100 to $150. Perhaps the extra cost covers the device’s new hardware specs. The Premiere box now comes with 500 gigabytes of total storage instead of just 320, which gives it ability to record up to 75 hours of HD content, claims Tivo.
“As the HD entertainment world has now become the standard, there is more demand than ever to provide consumers with additional recording capacity,” said Doug Bieter, Tivo vice president of retail sales, in a blog post.
Other price modifications include a slashing of the cost of the Tivo Premiere XL — that’s one terabyte of total storage — from $300 to $250. Tivo’s also cut $100 off the total price of its top-of-the-line Tivo Premiere Elite box, giving TV enthusiasts a way to capture up to 300 hours of total HD content (thanks to its two-terabyte drive) for $400.
So how does this all play out for a potential purchaser who just wants a year’s worth of Tivo? For a single Tivo subscription, a new customer can expect to shell out a total of $330 for Tivo Premiere, $430 for Tivo Premiere XL, or $580 for Tivo Premiere Elite. And should one want to replace Tivo’s monthly cost with a lifetime subscription — that’s per Tivo box, not per subscriber — add $320 to each of the total prices we just listed.
The lifetime subscription model, we should note, only makes financial sense if a person intends to own the same Tivo box for more than 33 months, or two years and nine months.
