RunKeeper App Lands on Pebble Smartwatch

RunKeeper and Pebble today released an integrated app that turns the Pebble smartwatch into a personal trainer.

The app was initially promised a year ago as part of the expected fall launch of the Pebble, but early shipment delays kept backers from tracking workouts with their wrist in 2012.

Now, exercise junkies can get their fix via the Pebble, which connects with the RunKeeper iPhone and Android app, and allows runners, walkers, cyclists, hikers, and skiers to be unencumbered by a smartphone during a workout. RunKeeper tracks pace, mileage, and starting and stopping points, as well as other features that are fully accessible on the Pebble.

“People are rightfully excited about wearables because they extend the experience of mobile apps like RunKeeper, so they can be enjoyed without taking your phone out of your pocket,” RunKeeper CEO Jason Jacobs said in a statement. “Pebble is such an exciting partner for RunKeeper; it is a great device and a powerful showcase of how your runs, walks and bike rides with RunKeeper can be enhanced by wearable device integration. We look forward to integrating with more wearable devices in the future.”

The Pebble deal is the first of what RunKeeper said will be many integrations with hardware and fitness tracking devices. Check out the smartwatch-compatible RunKeeper app in action in the video below.

“Pebble integrates tech into people’s daily lives in a fashionable and unobtrusive way,” Eric Migicovsky, Pebble CEO, said in a statement. “With the RunKeeper app, fitness enthusiasts can benefit from Pebble to track their workouts, get motivated and meet their goals.”

Pebble knows all about meeting goals. As one of the most successful Kickstarter projects to date, the watch began shipping to initial backers on Jan. 23. The smartwatch is available for pre-order on the company’s website for $150.
