Report: Nvidia Files Plans for Sprawling New Headquarters

Nvidia is planning to build a sprawling new campus next door to its current headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif., according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

Plans filed with the city of Santa Clara (pictured) indicate that the new campus will include nearly 1 million square feet of office space in the 25-acre, Nvidia-owned San Tomas Office Park. It will consist of six-sided, 483,475-square-foot buildings, each with a “sloped glass curtain wall on each side ris[ing] to a curvaceous, geodesic roof,” the paper’s Nathan Donato-Weinstein reported Monday.

In terms of its size and imprint on Silicon Valley, Nvidia’s planned expansion could rival Apple’s 150-acre “spaceship campus” set to be completed by mid-2016, as well as area structures being built by Facebook and Samsung, the Silicon Valley Business Journal said.

An Nvidia spokesperson declined to comment on the report, saying the company was in its quiet period ahead of its fourth-quarter earnings report scheduled for Wednesday. In recent years, the leading maker of computer graphics has expanded into the booming mobile device market with its Tegra-branded chipsets for tablets and smartphons.

The plans do not actually name Nvidia as the company involved in the project, but Donato-Weinstein noted that the graphics chip maker has owned the land named in the filing since 2009.

The anticipated cost of building the proposed new campus isn’t listed either, but the county filing does name project participants like architecture firm M. Arthur Gensler Jr. & Associates, engineering firm Kier & Wright, and landscape architects Tom Leader Studio.

The San Mateo-based Sares Regis Group is listed as the project developer.

Donato-Weinstein, who followed up Monday’s report with an in-depth look at Nvidia’s campus expansion on Tuesday, described the proposed new San Tomas Office Park structures as possessing “[a]bsolutely massive floors intended to facilitate the collaborative work environment so popular these days.”

The plans also reference a future development phase that “could add up to 767,500 square feet of additional office space at the intersection of Condensa Street and the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail,” the reporter said.
