December Returns to Android People App With 4.2.1 Update
Google today confirmed that it is now rolling out a fix for an Android glitch that accidentally removed the month of December from the People app.
The problem affected those who upgraded to version 4.2 of Android Jelly Bean. Users who tried to enter in a December birthday or anniversary in the People app were out of luck; it skipped right from November to January. It did not affect the Calendar app.
Now, a small 1.1MB Android 4.2.1 update is rolling out to stop 2013 from starting a month early. TalkAndroid.com’s Ed Caggiani said this morning that his Nexus 10 got the Android 4.2.1 upgrade around midnight. Others on Android forums had to wait a bit longer.
The “December problem” was first reported on the Google forums by user Rohit on Nov. 14, who had a Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.2. “Today I was inserting birthday of a friend in my contact list so that I can sync the birthdays in my calendar,” he wrote. “I noticed that the December month is missing. When I pressed new event the calendar came but it was not having the option for the month December.”
The Android team addressed the problem last week in a Google+ post. “We discovered a bug in the Android 4.2 update, which makes it impossible to enter December events in optional fields of the People app (this bug did not affect Calendar),” they wrote. “Rest assured, this will be fixed soon so that those of you with December birthdays and anniversaries won’t be forgotten by your friends and family.”
