CyberPower PR1500LCDRTXL2U UPS

When you invest in electronics, be it for the home theater or for the home office, battery backup is something that should not be left out of your budget. In these days, when time equals money, it's unthinkable that a lightning strike, random brownout or other electrical snafu could cost you hours of work or even thousands of dollars in equipment. CyberPower's PR1500LCD UPS will guarantee your work doesn't get wiped out when someone down at the local power station decides to trip over an extension cord, or a squirrel forgets that running the Nutty 500 race across a wet power line might not be the best decision he's made all week.

Furman IT-Reference 20i Power Conditioner

Ive been suspicious of power conditioners ever since they first appeared sometime in the Jurassic Park period I think. Just like the science in that movie is a little glossed over, so is the science of AC power glossed over by wild claims for power conditioning products. Besides, when we shell out the big bucks for good hifi a lot of what were paying for is the power supply. Thats why we pick it up before we buy it. A good power supply means a big transformer, which is heavy. And big capacitors which wed like to see neatly arranged. I was willing to give Furman a try however because for one thing, they got their start in pro-audio. I dont necessarily think that the pro-audio world has an advantage over the retail audiophile crowd (thats you and me) when it comes to good ears.

ezGear ezSpace Wall Mount UFO Surge Protector

I love certain gadgets that are targeted to making our lives easier. ezGear showed off a product that extends their top selling ezSpace UFO space saving surge protectors with the introduction of the ezSpace Wall Mount UFO. Weird name, cool product. Created in the shape of the iconic round... um, UFO, the ezSpace UFO is a 6 outlet plug expander with built-in 1050 Joule surge protection that provides space for a large plug or transformer on each outlet.

Torus RM-10 Power Conditioner, Isolation, and Protection Unit

Torus Power makes as wide an array of isolation transformers as I have ever encountered. The 100 amp version (RM-100) would be a great addition for supplying isolated AC to an entire home theater in custom install situations, but a small one like the RM-10 is useful especially for digital sources and projectors, the total power of which does not exceed 10 amperes.

APC AV APC AV C10 Home Theater Power Filter

The APC AV C10 marks another well executed and no BS A/V power product from a company that is, in my experience, unparalleled in their collective knowledge of power protection and backup. With all of the major safety agency approvals (ie. UL, CSA, Part68, etc), 12 filtered and surge protected outlets, connections for cable TV, phone, ethernet and line voltage monitoring, the APC AV C10 is everything one could ask for in a power strip and more. I highly recommend this unit for anyone looking for a cost effective power filter solution with ample outlets and unparalleled reliability.

APC has long been associated with UPS and power solutions. The H15 performs its every job superbly - of that there is no doubt. Personally, the H15 embodies the perfect marriage of form and function. It looks as good as it performs. The H15 provides top of the line protection and regulation along with the piece of mind that can't be beat at this price point.

APC S20 Power Conditioner with Battery Backup

When I was asked to review the APC S20, a power conditioner with battery backup, I didnt fully appreciate how important or perfect this unit would be in controlling and protecting the gear in our Home Theater, but after using it for a few months, I now consider the APC S20 an essential part of our setup.

Surge Protectors 101

It had a rectangular body with a snake-like appendage that connected it to a plug on the wall. A number of helpless electrical devices plugged into the rectangular brick that was its power source. Its name was Surge Protector–the guardian of computers and electrical appliances, and preserver of operational voltaic doohickeys. Surge protectors may not be one of the X-Men or Fantastic Four, but they’re definitely super heroes for any techie or techie-wanna-be. But what are they? Why are they so necessary? How do they work? And what kinds are the best? What's a Surge Protector? Surge protectors come in many different shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common: they all protect electrical devices (computers, monitors, printers, televisions, DVD players, CD players, etc.) from surges in voltage. That’s what surge protectors do. They're always on duty: during a lightning storm; freak voltage spikes from the power company; or—more likely than not—a surge in power from demands by high-power electrical appliances or devices, like air conditioners or vacuum cleaners. Without a surge protector your electrical devices are helpless sitting ducks, waiting to be crisply blackened by the fire of unrestrained electricity. Besides preventing such an unpleasant scenario, ...
