Intel Remote Wake to Catch VoIP Calls

Chipmaker Intel is getting ready to release new motherboard designs featuring a "Remote Wake" feature that will enable desktop PCs connected to the Internet via Ethernet to power up when they detect an incoming VoIP call. Although the technology will initially only be available on selected Intel-designed motherboards, the company is reported working with OEMs who do their own motherboard designs—like Dell and Hewlett-Packard—to integrate the technology into their offerings. Intel motherboards with Remote Wake capability will be available to PC makers next month. The capability will initially only be available in desktop PCs connected to the Internet via an Ethernet connecti

Stolen Laptops Come Home

Imagine if there was a tracker buried deep in your laptop, put there in the motherboard bio during manufacture so it can’t be wiped. CompuTrace One, a tracking solution from Absolute Software, is that, and has helped track 5,000 computers. Certainly it’s worked for the West Midlands Police in Britain, who used it to trace 30 stolen computers from as far away as Saudi Arabia and Argentina. When one of the stolen machines was hooked up to the Net, it automatically connected to a monitoring center to give its IP address. That let local police use the ISP to discover its location.

Microsoft Lowered Vista Bar for Intel

Internal Microsoft email messages unsealed by a federal judge as part of the "Vista Capable" class action lawsuit reveal considerable trepidation even amongst Microsoft's high-level executives about how well Vista would fare on then-current systems. The messages also include seemingly plain admissions that Microsoft capitulated to Intel and lowered hardware requirements for Windows Vista so Intel could keep selling chipsets that, otherwise, would have had no future under Vista."In the end, we lowered the requirement to help Intel make their quarterly earnings so they could continue to sell motherboards with the 915 gr

TigerDirect Buying CompUSA Assets

Fans of old-school technology retailing may rejoice: the CompUSA brand may be changing, but it's not going away. As word broke in late 2007 that the venerable computer retailer CompUSA would be closing its remaining retail stores and, essentially, holding a fire sale on anything left on the shelves, some technology enthusiasts rejoices (whoo hoo! Longer lines at Best Buy, Fry's, and Circuit City!) but others lamented the loss of a well-known brand, where you could always go for a motherboard at two in the morning. And stop for some fries nearby. Thanks to a deal with electronics retailer Systemax, CompUSA will not be vanishing altogether. The comp
