In my book, matching beats mixing any day—especially when it comes to speakers. The three front speakers in a home theater (left, center and right) should be identical, or close to it. The surround sound speakers should sound as similar as possible to the front speakers, and all should work in concert with the subwoofer. The reason is simple: As a sound moves from speaker to speaker in your system, its tone should not change. Should Vin Diesel start sounding like Brad Pitt as his character retreats from a scene? Of course not.
