Comcast VCR problem

I have Comcast digital cable (not HD). One TV hooked up to main cable box, one to a DTA. Comcast instructions have wall cable line going to box, then to VCR, then to TV. VCR turns on to record correct channel, but no playback, only snowy screen. One Comcast tech said to hook up box to TV, then to recorder. I'd need some kind of splitter because there's only connection on TV. Next Comcast tech said it's a VCR problem. No help there. I'd appreciate any ideas.
