just got a new 16:9 Tv. hooked it to my digital cable using DVI. the hd channels look awsome.. but my regular channels in 4:3 is bad.. any sugg'ions ?

This is the nature of the beast. My suggestion is to also connect your cable output to the S-video input of your tv and watch SD material through it. My other suggestion is to save all the SD watch on an analog TV.
I've been told that if you watch the normal cable over the Antenna, rather than over DVI, where it is upconverting, the picture will look a little better.
