Direct TV to VCR To HDTV

We have been told our vcr may be too old and cannot record from Direct TV. We have 2 analog tv and one HD. Also appropriate boxes from Direct TV. All will play a vcr tape, none will record. Hooked up many different configerations Default has been vcrs too old. IF so is there a newer vcr that will record? Trying NOT to purchase any more technology and services at this time. Thanks, CJ
