RCA ProScan won't power up anymore. It was working yesterday, but when I tried today...dead as a door nail. any help?

Unplug the set from the wall.........wait at least one minute & plug it back in....Doing this sends a reset pulse back to the micropressor to get it operating properly again. If this is the case...enjoy. If nothing changes, you got other problems........good luck.....TED

How can I get a manual for a Proscan PS36125?

Do you mean an owner's manual or a service manual?

I hate to say this, but, I think RCA, Proscan, and GE TV's are actually made by Thomson Electronics these days - a French company. I found this out the hard way when my 31" 4:3 GE gave up the ghost (no pun intended) a few years ago. It turned out that the flyback tranformer had worked it's way loose on the circuit board. A little soldering, on my part, took care of the immediate problem, but less than a year later the picture tube went out. I went through 4 years of living hell with this TV, before it was relegated to the local landfill.

The last I checked, I could still get into the 'secret service menu' of RCA/Proscan/GE TV's at Circuit City, et cetera, using the same combination of front-panel button pushing.

Anyway, as fate would have it, I was notified by certified mail that this particular model was the subject of a (successful) class action lawsuit. I, of course, could not participate because I had done all the repairs myself.

To wit: Thomson Settles Defective TV Case

Since then, I have paid close attention to threads like this. At a 'screwdriver' level, Thomson Electronic TV's suck! Getting a few years of service out of them, followed by cataclysmic, e.g. costly failure is their hallmark.

Personally, I will NEVER own another Thomson Electronics product. If it was me, I'd get an estimate of repairs from a certified technician. If it turns out to be too expensive to repair (half the price of a new TV, or more), I'd thank my lucky stars and make a clock out of it, use it for target practice, or whatever... :-)

I have a 36" Proscan Model # PS35153 that won't turn on any more and have been told it could be the fuse or the power board. Does anyone know of a way that I can check these (and other things) before I pay $80 for a troubleshooting service call where the tech tells me it will cost an arm and a leg to repair the darn thing??

VinDSL, I think I missed the combination. What are the buttons for menu access? Thanks

I have a Pro-Scan PS35153 which you can "see the picture behind the menu text". When the set comes up and you get the time, channel you can see the picture in the text -- also if you call up the menu (video, audio, setup etc) you can see picture where the menu should be - yet when the menu functions go off -- screen is black -- almost like there is a curtain over the picture -- any suggestions ?

Mine just started doing the same )( on the screen. Did you ever get an answer or have to have a service call to fix it. Let me know ASAP.

I have a Proscan PSVR75 VCR which when powered on shows LOCK on the display. The manual say to press the power on.off key & VCR1 or VCR2 on the remote to clear this condition. This doesn't work. As a result I cannot eject the tape in the machine. Does anyone know how to clear this condition. I am not afraid to open up the VCR.

ProScan PS27108 no longer will receive cable channels. When a VCR is used it will not play sound or picture. When a GameBoy is plugged in it works fine. Seems the cable connect is faulty but so far I can find nothing disconnected or wrong. Any ideas? Thanks - Shad

I have a 27in ProscanTV of about 1998 vintage. Intermittently the picture gets obscured by shakey horizontal bars and the audio makes very loud raspy, screechy noise. Sometimes clears up just by changing channel and then is O K when return to original. Sometimes this goes on for 2 minutes, sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes it is perfect for days.

Where can I find an owners manual for a Proscan model ps27111? I need to know how to clear and set the channels (ie. channel 25 ESPN, 25 ESP2). I do not know how to clear the fields and enter the new channel ids (ESPN or ESP2).

Looking for a ProScan manual, for model 27113. Also, quoting above, "The last I checked, I could still get into the 'secret service menu' of RCA/Proscan/GE TV's at Circuit City, et cetera, using the same combination of front-panel button pushing." I'd like to know how to access the secret service menu as well.

I found a link on the RCA site to the ps7113 (no ps7111 or ps7111nx1)instruction book, and it was close enough to my ps7111 to use...mine doesn't have close captioning and my remote is a little different, but all the setup and back panel stuff was the same. Here's the link:

http://www.rca.com/documents/15128800_201059_25.pdf

Mine is a great TV...I've not had any troubles with mine. I'm semi-proficient with this TV since I just added DirectTV to the mix and had to add back my antenna so I could get local channels for a few weeks till they upgrade my dish, so I might be able to answer any questions, but maybe not. <IMG SRC="https://www.ecoustics.com/bbs/clipart/happy.gif" ALT=":-)" BORDER=0>

no power to proscan... works now!!!!

Got to love the internet. I googled "proscan tv troubleshooting" and found this forum.

MY tv didn't turn back on after a power loss we had in our neighborhood. I read Ted's post:

"Unplug the set from the wall.........wait at least one minute & plug it back in....Doing this sends a reset pulse back to the micropressor to get it operating properly again. If this is the case...enjoy. If nothing changes, you got other problems........good luck.....TED"

Works like a champ now. Thanks for saving me cash , time and heartache.

Other than that, I really like my Proscan PS27113. Works great, No other problems in over 7 years (knock on wood).

Thanks

I have a proscan PS 27113. When it's first turned on, the picture consists of one horizontal bar. It used to take about ten minutes to "warm up" to a full picture. This has been going on for months. Now it won't "warm up" at all. It only shows half of the picture. Any idea what the problem is? How I can fix it?

We inherited a 1995 Proscan PS52652 from a friend. He had had it repaired once before and it was workin g fine. Then one day it quit..nada. unplugged it for an hour. No change...It's been in the shop for about 2 weeks. Was told it would cost about $400 to fix it. What a pain, but less than a new one. Next time it will be a new one. Is this normal for a Proscan?

I have a PS60690 that turns on and off after you power up and most recently it shows "no signal" regardless of the input. A repairman came by yesterday and said it looked like it might be the digital modulator and if it is, there aren't replacement parts anymore. He has taken the guts out of the chassis to investigate at his shop. Has anyone found similar problems and if so, are there parts available?

Wow It sure does seem like we all have the same problem with this Pro Scan ours use to just turn on and off all by its self then it just turned off and you would have to keep pressing the on off button till it stayed on now it wont budge!!! We had it fixed a couple of times.
They say it was the high frequency board.
It would sort of work for awhile then back to the same ole stuff on off then just Off!!
What do ya do just throw it away????
Does Rca say anything about this or what?

I too am having troubles with a 1993 Proscan PS 31122. The TV turns on and then after a while the screen becomes snowy/grainy and then the audio sounds like it has feedback. The picture may come back after a while of turn to black all together. Turns on and off the TV sometimes helps.

Another question I have: Is there a master reset that takes all the options back to factory settings? I got this TV from my brother and want to erase all his options.

Well, I got my TV back from the repairman. There was good news and bad news. The TV was repaired because it turned out to just be some loose connections caused by expansion and contraction. The bad news is that if any of the components actually go out, there's probably not much he can do. Apparently, the company doesn't offer any replacements and there aren't any aftermarket parts he knows of. I've had the TV for 9 years and didn't realize they only had a 10 year life. I guess I will wait for the other shoe to drop. Good luck to you all.

I just inherited a ProScan model 32600 (circa 1999)from my girlfriend's family. The TV powers up and seems to function properly EXCEPT that the Brightness or in ProScan speak the "Black Level" seems to be too dark even when extended to its full range. I have worked to manipulate all of the other color controls to remedy, however, this has not worked. The colors are fine except the picture is just several shades too dark. Any suggestions?

Well my Proscan 35 console TV is probably 15 years old and has always worked perfectly so I can't say they stink... However ;) it just burped and the width is about 2 inches wider then the screen and can't be adjusted. I'm sure I could fix the darn thing I've yet to see a real post with the location to get schematics or the magic to get into the service screen. Besides the width problem it still looks great hate to toss the thing.

your t.v. needs a convergence board.
the stmptoms are a red, green, blue concave curve to your screen. also option #6 in the screen menu will be gone. This would allow you to adjust the convergence. I had to replace my board last feb. 2004 and it has gone out again. The cost is $400.00 to have a pepair man come to replace it. My unit is a 56" made in 1996. It has been good to me up untill last year and is now becoming a big pain in the but. I am deciding weather or not to pay another $400.00 to buy me another year or scrap it and cut my losses.

good luck. dave prepresstech@rcn.com

My Proscan ps27108 just stopped turning on too. One night it was fine, the next morning nothing. I've tried the unplug for a minute (or day) trick and it didn't help. I've had this thing in TWICE to fix some sort of circuit board - which was covered under a class action suit that I didn't know about and missed the deadlines for. :-(

Anyway, any ideas, or do I take it to the shop again?

Try an excorcism or if you prefer I conduct seances on a case by case basis. First of all I need you to answer a few questions:

1. Has a previous TV in your family passed away recently?

2. Do you have any hostile remote spirits in your house?

3. Do you believe in ghosts? Spirits? Phantom TVs? Or string theory?

Now the most important question?

4. Have you checked the batteries in your remote?

I have a 1995 60" proscan and it blinks out after about 4 minutes. It tries to come back on then blinks out again. Of course when I had the service guy come out, it worked perfectly and it cost me $60. Now it is doing it again. I think it has to do with the high voltage protection circuit. Is it even worth fixing? Email me if you have an idea. Thanks, Alan

I have a 2000 36" PS36500 Proscan. Just recently, our screen will go "blank", accompanied by a "Tone" which increases in pitch over a 60 second interval, at which time, It snaps back to "Normal" operation. Another thing, there is no "AUX" channel on this TV, which may have something ot do with it.

Any suggestions? Danny

Danny Barry if you have connected the DVD player to AV inputs via RCA or s-video, try channels around 90-105, some RCA TVs, maker of Proscan, have the aux on channels somewhere in there.

I've had similar problems with a 31" ps31108. Picture goes fuzzy, shrinks, and sound turns to loud static noise. Someone told me it was the "vertical hold". After reading in this forum, I'm wondering if its just not the tuner?

Also would like the combination to the "secret menu" with the front panel buttons.

I have a 36" Proscan that turns off and on, and then permanently off usually within one to 3 hours after power up. A TV service repairman had kept the TV for 5 weeks, and advised that parts availability caused delay. the repairs centered around the main PC board, high voltage section, and signal module. The TV was operational for a week or so and the off/on problem returned. Also there is a noticeable degrade in the quality of the picture. Does anyone have any suggestions as to Proscan service techs in the L.A. area or other suggestions?

RCA/Proscan = JUNK! plain and simple , DO NOT buy one of there sets. You have been warned .All get HV block problems . They are well known to all have the same problems , my 1995 3,000 set broke at least 8 times in the 5 years I had the warrenty for. The 9th time it sat there dead for over a year until I finnaly trashed it.Why do you think they no longer make Proscan ? hmm, maybe all the pissed off people who hate that brand name now . I know other people with diferant RCA Proscan sets and they all had and still have problems .

Never again , just bought a Hitachi happy so far . They have a much better repair record .

Just thought I would vent/ add my 2 cents as to all the Proscan /RCA problems .

I hate this tv! I will never by an RCA (Proscan) tv again! What a waste of money my sony 25 has been working since 1993 and the proscan was purchased in 1997. Junk! I tried the pull the plug out and same problem. I am already on my 3rd remote for this piece of junk!

I have a Proscan TV and VCR. When I go into the setup for the "Guide" service, none of the RCA or Proscan codes in the setup menu activate the VCR. There is no Thomson on the menu. Any ideas?

For people with remote control intermittent or complete failure problems:

This was my experience...I have a big honkin' unit I got from a guy in the building where I live for a couple hundred bucks.

I've never had any problems with the tv, but the remote was intermittent since the day I got it. I would put new batteries in it, it would work, then I'd pick it up and it wouldn't work. I'd futz with the battery spring and it would work, then pick it up and it wouldn't work. I'd shake it, it would work, then it wouldn't.

Just about drove me nuts.

Finally I took it apart and soldered the led in place.

Never had another problem.

Does this message board ever solve any problems?
Seems like just everyone's complaints, no solutions.
Is anyone out there who can help with solutions?

Pushed the wrong button on remote in the dark, now only get 3 channels and lots of static. Anyone with a solution here? Please?

My PS27115 power on attempts goes through three to four on/off cycles before shutting down. This appears to be a common problem as noted on the boards. I've ordered a service manual at "http://www.thomsonnetwork.com/unprotected/Dynamic/1,5078,-A1BCDBABFDF63280E0339D FEEACC3280,00.html". I used to service TVs years ago.

Will let you know how this turns out.

Hi Folks,

I broke the code!!

To "unlock" your Proscan VCR you press and hold (maybe ten seconds or so, or until the VCR goes back into "normal" mode) ONE of the following buttons, On/Off, VCR1 or VCR2 (depending on which one you are using). That's it!!

This is a "feature" call Protection Plus. It locks out the VCR from outside influences such as kids when you are using the timer recording feature, or for anytime you want to "lock" it out..

Another useful tidbit. You can get a PDF copy of your instruction manual from RCA's website. Here's the link: http://www.rca.com/customerservice/kbkeysearch/1,,CI700078,00.html.

If you scroll all the way to the bottom you will fine the PSVRXX section which lists the various VCR's.

Good luck!!

I have a Proscan PS32600 with a few problems. The thing that happens the most is the screen goes black but there is still sound and all the menus still show up and after a few minutes the picture comes back. Next, the screen will have a thin black line in the middle of it for a few minutes and will go away. And sometime it shuts off all together and when I turn it back on it says there was a power outage. Oh and the volume down button on the TV changes the channel. Does anyone know what is wrong with my TV and how much it will cost to fix it?

Proscan model PS32500. Power went out, came back on and now it won't let us use the dvd player. Tried set-up, it goes through the channels but offers no option for dvd. It won't let you manually choose it either, it freezes up on the guide plus screen, can't go any further.

I have an 8 yr old Proscan rear-projection TV, model # 50670LGI. I have only had one other problem with it since new (6th year) which was fixed under the extended warranty I had ourchased. All things considered, I feel that it has been a very good set that required very little adjustment over the years.

My current problem is that the remote (with new Batts)is unable to turn the set ON (or OFF once it is manually set to ON). However, if I turn my VCR (also Proscan)on and press the VCR button on the remote, I can control the TV via the VCR. Then, if I turn the VCR OFF, I still keep my picture but have no control using the remote I.E can't change channels or adjust volumn. Has anyone experienced this problem and been able to resolve it??? Hoping you can help.
PS. One of the attractions for this set is that the works are in a removable draw (bottom) and repairmen who can't fix it on site can move it without too much difficulty.
