Cable TV hookup question

I have digital cable running into my apt. I would like to "split" this signal so that i can control the analog box in the bed room (purchased separately) and the DTV box(living room) independently. What is the best solution without sacrificing picture quality, etc...
Can the cable company force me to remove my additional "split"?

I have a similar setup. My cable company said only to use a bi-directional splitter and it did the job - no deterioriation in picture quality.

A bi-directional splitter looks the same as the average splitter but compensates for the lost signal and only costs a few more dollars.

Make sure it goes up to 1Mhz in frequency so you properly pass the digital signals. RCA sells these things at Home Depot, etc. Cost about $6.00.
