Any real advantage to a 1080p TV vs. 720p

I am considering two LDC flat panel TVs - either the the Samsung 40" LNR 409D LCD, which is native 720p resolution, or waiting for the new Westinghouse 42" LVM-42w2 which is native 1080p. Both are in the same price range (~$2800), although I can probably get the Samsung cheaper. I'm most interested in getting the best possible picture for HD TV signals and home DVD movies. Today's HD TV broadcasts are in either 1080i or 720p, and the Westinghouse upscales everything to 1080p, whereas the Samsung converts everything to 720p. First question: are there any picture quality losses in the upscaling process from 720p or 1080i to 1080p? Is the only advantage of 1080p in the future with HD DVD, or will it provide a better picture for 1080i broadcasts than the TV that downscales those signals to 720p? Is it a given that the 1080p set will clearer for today's broadcasts? Any opinons / recommendations on which way to go? Thanks.

I would never buy a Westinghouse tv. But as for 1080p and 720p. There really isn't anything being broadcasted in 1080p yet. From what i know the best at the moment is 720p and 1080i. I recommend a JVC 40" LCD TV with a built in atsc tuner. The 1080i is about $3,000 and the 1080p model is about $3,999.

Not sure why Corey doesn't prefer the Westinghouse, as I've have seen no bad reviews, yet. It is new to the market, I suppose.

To help your shopping, check out the link below, this is the cheapest I've found it. no tax or shipping. 3 year ext warranty is only $189.

I am considering it myself, and have the same questions in my post, with the additions of THX and 7.1. Seems we are shopping for the future nowadays.
