Effect On Splitting Coaxial Cable

Hi,
I am using a coaxial cable from a directv receiver to 2 seperate tvs. The signal is split (slaved). I was wondering if the signal is still "split" when only one of the TVs is turned on. Obviously splitting the cable decreases the picture quality but I was wanting to know if it makes a difference whether 1 or both tv's are on.

Thanks!
Grant

Nope, no difference. Both sets are terminating the cable with 75 ohms whether they are on or not.

If the signal is strong enough, it can be split several times without loss of quality. I have 15dB of signal and utilize a 4 way splitter. Each tv receives about 5dB (very short runs) which makes for the exact same picture if I had the full 15. You will only get a problem if the signal starts out too weak, the cable is old allowing too much ingress, too many splits, and your final dB level is too far in the negative region to each tv.
