Sony analog VCR to Sony DTV

Brand new Sony 50" SXRD (love it). 10 year old analog Sony VCR. It worked great with CRT, but I am having problems with new hook up. I am using the same NTSC cable signal as before so I assume the signal is still analog (have not ordered digital yet). A per the TV manual, I use a splitter to branch one cable to TV and one to VCR, and component cables from VCR-out to TV-Input1. When attempting to play back a new TV recording on Input1, the audio is heard but no video... just a blue screen. When playing pre-recorded or previously recorded tapes I get audio AND video, but both are reduced significantly in quality. Am I experiencing a dirty head problem, or is something else going on? I have tried both 60 and 66 mHz (VCR Chan 3 and 4) for recording, but since the TV has an integrated digital and NTSC tuner, does this make any difference using a splitter?
