VCR Shuts down after play pressed - Solution new belt

My 20 year old Phillips (made by Toshiba) VCR recently stopped working.

After inserting a tape and pressing play some noises were emitted then the VCR shut off.

I cleaned all the rollers etc with alcohol but did not touch the heads. No luck.

With the lid off I observed that the two wheels connected by a belt (that move the rollers that bring the tape in contact with the head) would run for 2 seconds but would start to slip. Then the VCR shut off.

I figured either the belt was loose or ther was too much resistance.

I replaced the belt (cost $1) and everything worked.

I have never fixed a VCR before. Luckily for me the problem was visible.

Good luck with your repair.

Andrew
