Sound choice between TV & Stereo components

I hope this is not something simple I'm missing, I'm pretty worn out from the setup.

My home theatre is setup so that you can receive stereo sound from the stereo components.

Cable(Coax)-->cable box(RCA)-->audio to stereo receiver(RCA)-->video to TV

Although at times we just watch TV without turning on the stereo components.

The issue being that if you use cable/coaxial through a VCR with RCA to the stereo your set, until you want to use something other than coaxial.

I bypassed the VCR by using RCA through the cable box video/audio to the TV, in this case the TV is your audio, I'm stuck with TV audio only.

If I bypass the VCR using RCA split with video to the TV & audio to the stereo, I'm stuck with stereo components for sound only.

I need the best of both worlds without coaxial, I keep getting stuck on the "thought" of an audio splitter, where the RCA audio goes to both your TV & to your stereo if there is such a quality device/cable worth your while?

I may just be tired here or opened pandoras box not sure which.

I believe the key here is that I'm not using a VCR or coaxial from the cable box.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks.
