Home Theatre Systems Shopping--S-Video/Component Video Inputs

I am shopping for a home theatre systems all in one. I have a television set that is about 3 years old. It is not HD. Do I need the s-video or component video inputs on a home theatre receiver/dvd combo? Why would I need them?
