Built in freeview surround sound

I have searched the web but can not find a solution for this. I have a Technika TV and Technika 5.1 surround sound system with dvd. The surround sound works when playing a dvd in the player but does not work with normal tv or the built in freeview. I currently have an optical lead from the tv to the SS unit, and an HDMI from the tv to the SS unit. I also tried red and white audio cables from the tv to the SS audio input but no luck. Any ideas?

Your problem may be as simple as a menu setting on the TV to send audio (digital / analog) through the appropriate connection. Also make sure your audio source choice on the SS is selected for the line in you're using (again digital / analog and or source aux., line in or TV in...)
