Ok. Im a super novice so don't laugh at me. I have the following speakers:

polk side speaker
proseries 1000 definitive center
prosub 800 subwoofer definitive
yamaha receiver (7.1) about 5 yrs old
sont ps3 (for my blue rays)
At&t Uverse DVR

I need to know what components I need to get the best possible sound from these speakers/equipment (as best quality digital sound possible)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just tell me what I need to buy to make the sound hook up the best. Thanks!

Do you have the speakers hooked up to the receiver? Are you OK there?

What TV are you using?

What hookups are available on the DVR?

I have the speakers hooked up to the receiver with reg speaker wires and everything else is just basic setup to sub and center thru the tv sound output to receiver. I was hoping for a better way to get the best possible true digital sound but dont know how to go about doing this......

I have a samsung lcd 46 inch LN46A550 but i dont know what kind of configuration the dvr has. Its a standard AT&T Uverse multi room DVR that can record 4 shows at once (2 hd and 2 sd)

First, make sure you are running digital audio into the receiver from all sources. I believe the PS3 uses optical on its output. You'll have to look for an output on the DVR. It will be either optical or coax.
