Can my TV output surround sound?

I recently purchased a Yamaha surround sound receiver. I decided to take the easy route and I left all of my devices hooked up to my TV, then I ran the red/white RCA cables from the 'Audio Out' jack of the TV to the 'Audio In' on the DVD jack of the receiver. Can I get 5.1 surround this way? Two of my devices are hooked up to the TV through HDMI and the cableTV comes in through the Red/Green/Blue and the Red/White cables (don't know the name). If this ISN'T getting me surround sound, the TV has a jack that says 'Digital Audio Out (Optical)'. Should I use that instead? Thank you!!

As is usually the case, the easy way is not the best! Your TV probably will not convert digital sound to analog so that the connection method you are using may not work at all depending on the source you are listening to and if there is sound, it can be made better by proper connection.
