Hi,

I recently bought a condo and itching to upgrade all my A/V needs. Thing is, is that its sort of a wierd living room I have. One wall is cement, one wall is glass, the ceiling is also cement and 11' high, one wall is actually drywall (wall with the TV on it) and then the rest is an open loft/kitchen area, in total its probably 300sqft.

So anyways, i've been looking for some affordable, quality, stylish black or silver 3-way tower speakers and am having the hardest time. I found some yamaha NS-555's that might be good but its hard to tell. Can I do better for under $300 a speaker? I'm also looking for a quality 3-way center channel that isn't massive for under $300. Also I plan on obtaining the 12" klipsch synergy sub for some boomin power.

I'm also looking for a powerful amp, the one I have is about a 20 year old pioneer, but I really want to get a digital receiver now that I'm watching blu rays and HDTV, and playing HD games and using HDMI cables for just about everything.

I plan on using a 5.1 surround setup to pair with my 50" TV sitting on a entertainment center. Hopefully someday I plan to upgrade to a 1080p projector, any ideas on those?

So hi, that's my first post, and thanks so much for helping me build my system!

Carl, why tower speakers and a subwoofer ? Your money may be better spent on a good small speaker and stands with a sub. Paradigm Mini Monitors may be a good starting point.
There are a lot of good receiver out there that will handle all your audio and video needs. Onkyo and Yamaha are very popular but I prefer Denon for ease of use and its iPOD intergration.
Better and cheaper front projectors have been introduced from Sony, Panasonic, and JVC for under $5000 .

Its such a big and tall open room, little bookshelf or speakers would look like garbage. I want them to be stylish, and obviously be able to boom my games/music/movies when I want to with HQ sound.

They don't have to be massive speakers, but the slimmer and taller the better. Also I don't like those speakers on stands because I have two dogs and I"m afraid if they are roughhousing, they'd knock them over :-)

The boom comes from a good sub woofer not $300 tower speakers. If you really want good sound get real with your equipment. Paradigm Monitor 7 or Monitor 9.

I was thinking about an SVS PB12-NSD subwoofer.... thoughts?

I like the look of those paradigm monitor 7 speakers, how much does a pair of those towers + a matching 3 way center cost? I can't seem to find pricing.

I still can't decide on a good amp after hours of searching on the web... there are just too many.

I did decide on a projector/screen setup though!

I like Denon receivers, they are about to release a new generation of receivers. The AVR -1910 is a good place to start.

Any opinions on the PSB Image T65's? I could pick up a pair of those for $729.

Are PSB subs as good as SVS subs? I could pick up a subseries 5i for about $350 and I'd probably be set for a bit.

I read that cube surrounds suck, what are my alternatives? I can't mount the speakers in wall so what would be a good option that isn't massive? Also my couch is against the wall so I don't think that speakers on stands would work very well... maybe they would?

What cube surround suck, Bose? Yes they suck. If you go with PSB ( which I have not heard but have read postive reports on) fronts you should try to go with them as center and surrounds. Center is more important than the surrounds. Sub can be any brand. Hsu sub get alot of good press.

So i've decided on:

2 PSB image t-65's as fronts
a PSB image c60 center
a svs pb12-nsd subwoofer

a Pioneer VSX-819H receiver

The PSB rear speakers are too big and for my tastes and I really don't want to take up valuable floor space in the rear near my couch with speaker stands.

Have you heard anything about orbaudio orbs?

Was thinking about the mod1 or mod2 quick pack for rear speakers since i'd be able to hang them without being too cumbersome.

Thanks for the help.

Surround speakers should be placed over your head left and right of the couch facing eack other.
Dipole and bipole speakers have two sets of drivers on opposite sides. Set up the same as regular surrounds but the null will face each other with the speakers firring front and back.

Orbs are not a bad choice for surrounds. I heard that Gallo speakers may be better but more expensive.

How high above your head should the surrounds be? Is there a particular angle they should be at in relation to your head? Or does it not really matter that much? I think i'm going to go with the orbs. They seem like an affordable alternative until I move to a bigger space quite a few years down the road!

Started out with an Elemental Designs 3.1 system instead of the PSB's. Got two A6 6T6 towers and a matching A6 6T6 MTM for a center. Got to wait until next week for my A5-350 sub to come, but I got a great deal on all this stuff. $1270 shipped! Now to find a decent 5.1 receiver with HDMI, some surrounds and I'll be all set for a long time! The 6T6's sound amazing by the way!
