TV: 42" Samsung LCD
HTIB: Sony ht-7000dh.

I hooked up the sony dvd player to the receiver with an HDMI and then hooked the receiver to my tv with another HDMI.

While trying to play a dvd, for some reason I can get audio through the tv's speakers but nothing through the surround sound. Is there something I've missed? I've read the manual about 3 times now and it's not showing me anything different.

Any help with this would be great, thank you.

dylan, Sony lists this feature in your HTIB as:

HDMI Passthrough Powerful HDMI connectivity allows for uncompressed audio and video to pass through directly to your television.

The word "passthrough" means exactly that---the Sony passes the HDMI signal through to the TV unprocessed in any way. The receiver does not extract the digital audio signal on the HDMI cable and send it to the surround speakers. A separate digital audio hookup (coax or optical) is necessary between the DVD player and the receiver. And yes, the sound will be just as good as the audio on the HDMI cable.
