How much of a difference will aimable tweeters make in an in ceiling system? I am trying to decide how to setup my system in a great room that will be used for both theater and general music.

Humans are very good at knowing the distance and direction of high frequency sound. We are very bad at locating low frequency sound. So, while the position of your sub-woofer may not be very important, the position and direction of tweeters is critical. (think about the difference between someone talking straight at you versus speaking 90 degrees away from you)

It will depend a lot on the acoustics of your room and the sensitivity of your ears. The only way to know for sure is to do a test. Do you have a speaker that you can temporarily mount to the ceiling in different orientations? Play around with it and see if you can tell the difference. Unless you have a hearing impairment, I would bet that you'll hear huge differences.
