Will a different wire work?

I recently bought a house that was pre-wired for 5.1 surround sound. The built-in subwoofer wire has RCA female at both ends. My reciever and sub both have regular speaker wire connections. My question is: will the built-in wire work between lengths of speaker wire, as an extension, or will it disrupt the signal?

I had the exact same prblem. I adapted the end of my regular speaker wire with an RCA plug and I had no luck. Regular speaker wire is not shielded so I believe there was too much interference. Its worth trying though. You can buy a couple RCA plugs for a about 4 bucks. I ended up hooking my sub up using RG6 (cable TV wire) and that worked a little better. I have no interference but the connections are very touchy meaning my signal will cut out if they are moved around.
