HDMI connections useful ?

Hi all,

Is there a good reason I should splurge for a receiver that has HDMI inputs (other than for switching) ? I have no aversion to hooking the sources (DVD and Dish) directly into the TV's HDMI inputs...and running audio to the receiver. I just don't want to miss out on a huge gain for audio quality. For that matter, if I used the component connections for video between the sources and the TV would there be a loss in video quality ? Trying to gauge what I am gaining with the HDMI connections.

Thanks from a true newb !

It is highly recomended that you run a search first BEFORE posting. You will find that this particular subject has been rehashed a hundred (probably) times. As to quality between HDMI/DVI and optical for audio = no difference. Between RGB and HDMI for video = no discernible difference.
