Before I post my question let me thank all of you on this forum for the wealth of information you guys post. I purchased a Bose Lifystyle 35 Series II (I know, I know!!) I set it up and was not impressed. As far as I knew Bose was top notch. I began looking on the internet and stumbled upon this forum...I was appalled at all the criticism Bose was receiving and was offended to some extent...Only after I admitted I knew nothing about audio systems, did I realize I fell prey to marketing. For those of you who are thinking of purchasing a Bose system, please do not...(unless you are doing it for the stylish looks). They are NOT worth it, do your research and you will see.

Now to my question, I purchased the Orb Audio People's Choice system along with the Pioneer VSX 815K receiver they offered. I have a DVD player that I will be using for movies and CDs. My receiver and DVD player are about 25 feet away from each other and I have to run whatever cable I choose through a "thin" raceway along the wall. A salesman recommended I purchase the Audioquest VDMA Composite Video Cable to hook up my DVD player to the receiver. Is this a good idea? I'm worried Im sacrifing my CD sound quality? is this the case, and if so what are my alternatives?

Don't spend your $$$ on expensive cables, save it for something else. Cable manufacturers are trying to sell you Snake Oil. Read this article before you make a decision.

Stay away from Monster cable and the like. Look for good cables at an affordable price. There is a review at Audioholics on Audioquest cables, although it is for audio cables, it makes for an interesting read. Do your homework before you buy.

Wow, thanks a lot Gilles, you learn something new every day. However Im still in trouble...if I don't buy the audioquest VDMA(which I'm not too keen on buying)what cable can I purchase that is 1) thin enough to fit in the raceways; and 2)at least 30 feet long?

First off you mention you want to use composite cables from your DVD to your receiver. Are you sure? You would be getting analog video as well as audio. Yellow (video), Red (right audio) and White (left audio). You are not going to get high quality video with this type of connection. You should be using component cables for video Pr (Red), Pb (Blue) and Y (Green) and for sound either Optical or Coaxial for digital sound.

The following are all in 25 ft. lengths.

If Composite is your choice look at
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10207&cs_id=1020702 &p_id=126&seq=1&format=2&style=

If Component look at
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10235&cs_id=1023501 &p_id=2775&seq=1&format=2&style=

Both types of cables are Coaxial 20AWG Cable RG-59/U .

Optical cable, digital audio
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022901 &p_id=2766&seq=1&format=2&style=

or

Coaxial digital audio

These are not very expensive and will be more than sufficient. Hope this helps.

I can't believe the prices on these things...If I were to buy ALL the cables you suggested, I think it would STILL be cheaper than what I'm paying for the VDMA composite video cable! I need some serious help!

I'm not quite sure what the difference is between composite vs. component vs. coaxial...sorry I'm a novice a this. I saw the recommended cables and I am interested in the Optical cable you suggested, but is that only for audio? Will I have to go with component or composite in addition to this optical cable?

I can't do the component cables since I have a small raceway along the walls and the cables shown (sets of 3 and 5) will not fit. Is there (1) cable that provides good digital video and audio? or will I have to go with 2 sets of cables - 1 for video and 1 for audio?

Not that it matters at this juncture, but here is the link for the Audioquest Composite video cable:

Thanks again for all your help Gilles

I'm a bit confusing...perhaps this helps.

Here is the scenario:

1. A/V Receiver is on one side of the room (has to be there)
2. TV is on the other side of the room (has to be there)
3. The A/V Receiver and TV are about 30 feet from each other (no way around it - this was the only way my wife will have it - she is still not happy I returned the Bose, she liked "the way it looked")
4. DVD/CD can be on either side - next to the A/V receiver or next to the Plasma TV(I don't want to spend the money and get 2 separate components)
5. I only have a thin raceway that will only fit one (1) cable [meaning it will not fit component cables - unless they are combined into one cable]
6. I want to maximize my audio and video capabilities

How can I do this?

As far as the difference between the 2 see the following for "Audio/Video Cables and Connectors Explained"
https://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/products/articles/207261.html

Coposite: 1 video and 2 audio (Stereo only)
Component: 3 video only
Digital audio: Optical or coaxial

The only cable that will give you both video and audio is an HDMI cable. Your receiver and DVD must have these types of connections.

The audioquest cable is slightly smaller in size but would give you the same results. The ones at monoprice are better for the price.

For the raceway you might have to find a larger one to suit your needs.

Could I then

1. place the DVD next to the AV receiver (across the room from the plasma tv)

DVD Player to AV Receiver Connection:
2. Use Component for video, and optical for audio for the DVD to the receiver; and

DVD Player to Plasma TV
3. Use an S Video to connect the DVD to the Plasma TV

Will that provide me with
a. Optimal CD sound
b. Optimal Surround Sound for DVD
c. Regular video signal from the DVD to my Plasma?

To answer your question. No. Your receiver does not upconvert video signals. Which means in simple terms, you cannot mix the type of cables ( S-video, Component, Composite etc.) You say S-Video to your Plasma. Do you not have a Component connection?

Your setup is not the best way to hook up your system and I would not recommend it. You should have all your components in one area, Satellite or Cable box, DVD, Receiver, etc. This will minimize cable length and cost. The only long run for cables would be from your Receiver to your TV. Use the same type of cables for all connections (ex. Component, Optical).

Here's how I would do it looking ast the back of the VSX-815
From DVD Component Out to Receiver Component In 1.
From DVD Optical Out to Receiver Optical In 2

If you have Satellite or cable then,
From Satelitte or cable box, Component Out to Receiver Component In 2.
From Satelitte or cable box, Optical Out to Receiver Optical In 1

And finally.
Component Out from your Receiver to Component In to your plasma. No audio cable required since your speakers are hooked up to your Receiver.

This type of connection will give you the best quality available for this Receiver.

One more thing the link I gave you for the RCA Component cables included the 2 audio as well. Here is the link for the 3 RCA Component cable only.

Sorry for the confusion.
