What's the best kind of speaker system for this room? I currently have 1997 Bose Acoustimass speakers and am not overly enthused about them. I'm moving to another house and am considering putting in a new speaker system. The room is about 14' wide and 30' long, but the actual "living rm/listening area" of that is only about 17' so I will be unable to put a speaker on the left side of the room. Would "in ceiling" speakers such as the Paradigm CS or AMS series be better than putting the surround speakers in the back of the room on the wall. I was told a Paradigm Cinema 90 speaker system would be good for a standard system by a salesman, but am curious about the in ceiling option. I have a 2004 Yamaha HTR-5740 6.1 Receiver that I have been using as a 5.1 system with the Bose Speakers. Help!

Paradigms are worlds better than your current Bose set-up, so it is a win-win situation for you.

I am not a big fan of in-ceiling speakers, I believe they sacrifice good sound over aesthetics, but that is a personal preference, you may like it yourself. Specially if aesthetics are your primary concern, the Paradigm AMS series are excellent. I think they sound well for in-ceiling speakers.

Unless there is anything wrong with your receiver, it should work well with the Paradigm.

Thank you Berny! That's what I needed to know. I definitely want good sound. Is there another brand I should investigate or are the Paradigm's my best option?

Paradigms are not necessarily your only option. Check also Athena in-ceiling speakers called the Architectural Series

http://www.athenaspeakers.com/architectural-technology.htm

and there is Axiom with their own architectural series as well:
