PS2 optical connection question

Anonymous
Bought the Samsung HT-DM550. Great system so far. It has a digtital input and I want to know if I can connect my PS2 through this connection. Also -are any other connections needed for the PS2 to work? Does the digital cable carry both audio and video. I am out of the other inputs except this digital input

You need a Toslink cable. A Radio Shack toslink will do, no need for something fancy as long as its not broken inside (light is light after all).

It caries sound only(the video is carried by the video connection, either, composite, s-video or component, though these also have RCA sound on them as well as its a PS2 specific cable with the USB-like end to hook into the PS2). You'll want to unplug the RCA sound and just leave the video hooked up (or just turn down the volume on your TV.

In the PS2 System Configuration menu you need to turn on Digital Out (Optical) to ON and also DD5.1/DTS to ON as well. Then try an EA Sports game - These usually provide dynamic 3D sound via DTS or a DVD.
