I'm looking to buy new speakers and have the yamaha rx-v440. While I find movies sound fabulous with the reciever, cd audio seems a bit thin. What kind of speakers would be best to match with my yamaha reciever that might sound a little fuller for cd audio.

I would suggest Paradigm and PSB.

I'm familiar with paradigm, but not PSB (haven't listened to them before). Pretty much similar speakers? Do you have a personal preference?

One other thing, I've been reading a bit about Axiom speakers ... do you know anything about them. Are they bright speaker like "energy" or are they fuller and deeper like paradigm.

You have good ears - most surround receivers don't do music very well. There are a couple of upscale ones that do but are pricy. Speaker upgrade might not do the trick - you might have to get a dedicated stereo amp to satisfy your ever developing ear in it's persuit of sonic heaven.

You get more quality buying used on www.audiogon.com or the ebay (if trust is enough - be careful whom to trust - check the sellers rating on the right upper corner)

Nad c320bee (50watts amp $280)

Rotel (on ebay)

onkyo (8511 100 watts receiver $250) www.ubid.com sometimes has onkyos on a good deal (m-282)

Arcam

Musical fidelity

I am getting this digital receiver - if you live near a Bestbuy, audition this new technology - it won me over in a second - so clean and smooth with fantastic bass.

Affordable too - only $300 shipped. It's a surround receiver, so you can bi-amp your speakers (if your speaker allows this) - separate wires to your woofer and tweeter for better sound.

Here is what people are saying about it (on the buttom of page 15)

You can get it here:

I already got this digital amp mini unit for only $150 - with a speaker upgrade, it just might be what you are looking for - if not, then you must spend many folds.

Looks like another audiophile ambition is born - don't catch the ever upgrading bug like some who end up spending as much as a car or a condo. Get what you like, and enjoy it for awhile at least b4 upgrading.

There are many things you can do to make your system sound better - after getting the components, check out the tweak advices here if you want to seriously get involved -

Hope you find your sonic heaven...

Axioms are good speaker value since they sell direct cutting out the middle man. Clear sounding and look good too. Psb are good too.

But I would recommend getting a dedicated stereo amp - sounds like you are ready for it. There is integrated amp section here on ecoustics discussion if you decide to go this path.

Seperate pre and power amp gives you even more quality for more money if an integrated does'nt do it for you.

Thanks a lot for the info! Some interesting links there to be looked at.

Maybe I'll have to go the dedicated amp route. My old amp, which I still have (an older pioneer) I was very happy with in terms of cd audio. It's not a digital reciever so I was stuck with dolby surround but in terms of music I was extremely happy. The only reason I haven't been using it is convenience, since my new reciever has binding posts and my old one just had the clips (not sure what the technical term is) where you just shove the wire into. It was just a real pain to dig in behind my entertainment unit and always be switching the wire. I went to a store in town to get some help in terms of finding some sort of connector to make the switch easier, but no one had any really good ideas. Maybe I'll go back out and see if I can find something. If I could make that switch a little easier I'd be content with the sound. Any ideas on that one??

You can do this - radio shack has the supplys to make a small switch box. Explain what you want to do.

You just need any switch - attach speaker cables to side 1 and 2 of the switch.

If you don't want to make it your-self, any electronic repair shop can make it for you easily.

A switch like this is all you need.
