I am planning on setting up my first HT and have to admitt I am lost. I have a very open floor plan with concrete floors, high ceiling and few walls. Has anyone had experience setting up a HT in this type of environment? I know that this is not good acoustically, but can anyone suggest what brand or type of speaker I should look at? Also, does anyone know of any online resources that might be helpful? Thanks.

I am just a newbie, but Paradigm and Axiom seem to be two of the highly thought of speakers. From everything I have heard (which unfortanetly is not the speakers), the Axiom M80's are probably your biggest bang for the buck and should be able to handle your room. Don't buy without doing ALOT of research. You can spend $800 and get an awesome speaker and also can spend $800 and get a piece of c... Read this forum thoroughly

Post it on www.audioasylum.com with the dimensions and furniture placements, and you will get recommendations - like a carpet under speakers, wall diffusing panels, etc.

You can read about it in a book, if you are a reader - search for "acoustic treatments" at amazon.com. Here is one :

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0071360972

Room treatments are an involving project, but will reward, if you want to get good sound at home. This is a good sight for do-it-yourself projects - economical and fun if you like building it yourself.

What is your budget?

For a receiver, there is panasonic sa-xr45 for $300 shipped - it is a digital receiver.
You can read what people are saying about it here (way on the buttom) - http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/viewtopic.php?t=4991&postdays=0&postorder=asc &highlight=saxr45&start=140&sid=a5d5052f5b73095646dd2889536a97e1

You can buy it here for a good price:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/handr-deals/30044.html

You might be looking for more quality, in which case the price goes up a few folds. I personally am not into spending a lot on surround sound, since they do not do music so well - do we really need 6 expensive speakers
for movies?

I will get a quality 2-channel system, and
an ok surround system, or use the 2-channel system for movies as well.

But I would shoot for something better than the entry level stuff - they give you listener's fatigue, and bother you instead of entertaining you.

You can get NHT speaker package that will not annoy you - http://www.accessories4less.com/Amazing/index.asp?CartId=12-EVEREST-677692INHKQ4 4&FCat=1&FSCat=++++++41

Just my opinion on the subject,

It's always a good idea to get other's advices b4 buying (especially from pros with no financial interest), but in the end, get what you like - it's your toy and you have to enjoy it to your heart's content...
