I suppose it could be a publicity stunt. Their past few albums did not do too well. This way they draw attention to themselves and who knows in 5 years they'll get back together for a world tour and call it something original like "Hell Freezes Over Tour".

Actually, that's only an original title if the group has already retired and come back together at least three times.

REM certainly explored a lot of uncharted territory. I was never a fan of them, but quickly learned to respect their exploratory approach.
