Turn it UP....no LOUDER!

At quiet time......I have the sound low enough that even my new, quieter fridge makes it worse. The good news, is the fridge doesn't run nearly as much as the old one! not by half.

headphones?

Leo, headphones?

Been saying it for YEARS. It's by FAR the best way to experience any music. No outside influence or room distortion. Just you and the track one on one. It can take you places.

It's kinda like sleep. Some choose to slumber wearing ear plugs or muffs. It filters out what you don't want to hear.

Been buried at work but got a little time last night and today to listen some:

Wicked soundtrack, my wife and I just saw it Thursday.

Handel's Messiah - one of the 2 top versions from the website that Art recommended and very well recorded.

Elvis - His story - not as well recorded as the 2 Elvis albums that Jan recommended but 30 No. 1 hits so not all bad.

Tonight's listening

Gojira (newest stuff)
A Perfect Circle
Some modern pop
Godsmack
Daft Punk (Tron Legacy)
Untouchables from KoRn

After months, I have finally been able to listen unbiased (or with less, at least, since my hearing isn't blocked from the sickness, and I've had the same settings for months) and was able to conclude I've got too much mid-bass (40hz-60hz specifically). The details are being masked and I believe this can be fixed (this region is the are of overlap between the subwoofer and speakers) by changing the EQ slightly.

I had 4 filters on the EQ - 1 and 2 for shaping the midbass, 3 and 4 for flattening out the sub 35hz region.

It turns out I boosting the deepest bass (below 30hz) too aggressively, causing an unnatural heaviness that caused a headache, so I turned those down 4dB, while there's something in my room that causes 27hz to be louder than the other frequencies when not EQ'd, so I added a filter for that.

Finally, the midbass sloped too fast (extreme house curve), covering up the upper frequencies, so I re-shaped it (and adjusted the sub level accordingly to integrate with the mains) by lowering the 50hz gain.

All is well again in the bass. It is now what you would call 'tight.' One of the biggest contributors to sloppy bass or 'overbearing' bass is in the recording itself. A kick drum waveform starts with an impulse at some upper frequency (the initial hit of the head) and is followed by a lower frequency that both lowers in level and drops in frequency as time evolves (the ringing of the head). If the frequencies are out of balance, you will hear the impulse followed by a boom that may get louder or ring at a certain frequency, therefore covering up the other frequencies as the waveform progresses. Thus, it will sound either boomy and bloated (gets louder as it progresses) or undefined and one-noted (one frequency dominates and masks the others).

Here's a pic of the waveform. Note the initial impulse (with the sound of the beater hitting the head - the higher freqs before the impulse) followed by a lower frequency that dies out.
Upload

This also applies to other types of instruments and obviously bass runs, but the kick is an easy example.

So for the people that like to go without subwoofers, it's not necessarily that bass is bad - it's just difficult to integrate properly at times.
